ULI Arizona | LISC
Phoenix | ASU Stardust Center - $20,000 (FY08 RdI)
ULI Arizona is sponsoring the Local Initiatives Support
Coalition (LISC) Phoenix and the Arizona State University Stardust
Center for Affordable Homes and the Family to develop a toolkit and
strategy to engage residents, businesses, civic leaders and community
organizations about the challenges of Phoenix’s population growth.
The goal will be to provide realistic solutions and designs for building
sustainable, affordable and healthy neighborhoods. The $20,000 grant
will support research, the creation of a speaker’s bureau, a Power
Point presentation, a brochure, and a series of training workshops.
ULI Atlanta - $28,000 (FY06 RdII)
In response to the
Atlanta BeltLine project—which aims to create a ring of transit,
trails, and parks along Atlanta’s abandoned rail lines, connecting
neighborhoods with MARTA—ULI Atlanta has developed TRACK (Target,
Research, Acquire, Community, and Knowledge). TRACK will work to build
support for the BeltLine by bringing together planners, developers,and
the community to conduct a survey, mediate between parties, disseminate
expertise, and report on results. The project will focus on building
consensus for an early goal of the BeltLine—creation of a park
where a quarry now operates.
City of Colorado Springs/ Jim Rees, ULI member - $10,483 (FY05
RdI)
Led by the City of Colorado Springs, in partnership with the Urban
Renewal Authority, the University of Colorado and various private sector
representatives, the team will prepare a redevelopment plan for North
Nevada Avenue, an area designated for high tech/innovation and high
quality urban renewal. The project includes using students from the
University of Colorado to work with the public and private sectors. This
project will engage members in an area of the state where ULI has been
less active.
ULI Colorado -
$20,000 (FY08 RdI)
ULI Colorado Grassroots
Outreach Program received a grant of $20,000 to partner with the
Colorado Tomorrow Alliance, to create a long-term education and outreach
campaign to increase public awareness of the benefits of sustainable
growth. The campaign will serve as a forum for community discussions
about smart growth. ULI Colorado will develop a speaker’s bureau
comprised of its members who will meet with community groups to engage
in discussion of land use issues.
ULI Colorado- $20,000 (FY07 RdII)
ULI Colorado will
partner with the University of Denver and
the City and County of Denver to
expand the representation of women and minorities within the real estate
development field through academic training at DU’s
Real Estate School, in combination with year-long, paid apprenticeships
with private developers.
A Speakers Series will bring nationally recognized
developers to Denver to advance best land use practices and engage this
emerging network of women and minorities in the real estate
field.
ULI Charlotte and the Charlotte Mecklenburg Housing
Partnership - $25,000 (FY07 RdI)
ULI Charlotte will
work with their inner-city advisor, who leads the Charlotte Mecklenburg
Housing Partnership, to create a long-term vision to guide in the
provision and preservation of affordable/workforce housing in the
Charlotte area. A visioning session to engage 300 stakeholders and
several follow-up workshops will lead to stronger relationships among
the public, private, and nonprofit these sectors and a better
understanding of the tools, best practices, and potential for
partnerships that will be necessary to implement the vision.
ULI Charlotte and UNC Charlotte - $35,000 (FY05 RdII)
ULI Charlotte will team with UNC Charlotte, with matching
funds from the Knight Foundation, to educate and advise locally elected
leaders on applying smart growth principles to large-scale, mixed-use
development in the more rural counties surrounding Charlotte. The grant
will be used to fund a symposium where community leaders will present
and discuss problems and best practices with practitioners and experts.
UNC students will analyze the symposium results and produce a
summary.
ULI Chicago and University of Illinois at
Chicago - $10,000 (FY07 RdI)
ULI Chicago and the
University of Illinois at Chicago—Great Cities Initiative will
partner to complete and market Plan Commissioner On-Line, a virtual
training program for planning commissioners throughout the Chicago
region. The grant will fund a trial run of the program in one community,
before it is offered region wide. In addition, ULI Chicago and its
partner will produce a brochure to promote the program.
The Drachman Institute - $31,084 (FY06 RdI)
In response to increasing pressure on local ranch owners to
subdivide, the Drachman Institute at the University of Arizona will use
the Red Wing Ranch Project to create a better development model for the
region. Faculty members and students will research, plan, and design a
sustainable, self-sufficient community on the site of the donated
12,000-acre ranch, preserving open space and scenic vistas.
ULI Idaho - $20,000 (FY05
RdI)
This new District Council will team with Smart Growth Idaho to
conduct a study entitled “Consequences of Residential Infill
Development on Existing Neighborhoods in Treasure Valley.” The
team hopes to determine whether the fear of infill projects is based on
fact or perception. The findings of their study will be presented at
state and regional forums on smart growth and infill development.
ULI London and ULI Birmingham -
$14,000 (FY07 RdI)
ULI London and ULI
Birmingham will hold a workshop bringing together global experts to
discuss Tax Incremental Financing and its application to urban
regeneration projects in the UK. ULI experts will present detailed
examples of how the tool has worked to revitalize key American cities
and representatives from Germany and the Netherlands will share their
experience in value capture. The workshop will result in a roadmap for
how TIFs could improve regeneration funding in the UK.
ULI Memphis- $20,000
(FY07 RdII)
ULI Memphis and
the University
of Memphis will host four workshops to explore the role of urban
design in creating quality of life and place around universities and
other institutions. Each two-day
workshop will incorporate a nationally known speaker and a
mini-charrette about a particular urban design issue and its impact on
neighborhoods adjacent to the University.
ULI Minnesota - $40,000 (FY05 RdI)
ULI Minnesota, the Local Initiative Support Corporation, the
University of Minnesota and Target will spearhead a project to establish
an ongoing forum for mayors and ULI members to exchange ideas, advice
and expertise.
New Century
Transportation Foundation - $20,000 (FY06 RdII)
The New Century
Transportation Foundation will hold a workshop focused on the barriers
to and best practices of transit-oriented development in
Colorado’s fast-growing Roaring Fork Valley. ULI members and
national staff will be among those who speak at and facilitate the
workshop, which will be attended by local property owners, developers,
planners, elected officials, and citizens. The project will culminate in
a demonstration project and the publication of a white paper
highlighting best practices, model policies, and incentives.
ULI New York - $25,000 (FY05 RdI)
ULI New York will work with students from Stuyvesant High School to
create a documentary video on the relationship between transportation
systems and the quality of life in the Tribeca neighborhood.
ULI Northern New Jersey - $20,000
(FY05 RdII)
ULI will undertake a financial feasibility analysis for providing
structured parking around transit. A partnership with the New Jersey
Institute of Technology, ULINNJ will conduct four case studies and will
develop models for funding strategies that will support the financing
and construction of garages near transit stations. The project will
include $55,000 matching funds from other sources.
ULI North Texas -
$18,540 (FY06 RdI)
As a follow-up to an April 2005 regional visioning exercise modeled
after ULI Los Angeles's Reality Check, ULI North Texas will broaden
involvement and build support for regional action. Exercises and
workshops will be created to engage targeted groups of stakeholders and
regional leaders. The results of these will be fed back into the larger
regional process and assist in shaping overall regional decision making
while encouraging public involvement.
ULI Orange County - $21,000 (FY07
RdI)
In response to a
well-respected annual indicators report, ULI Orange County will explore
the nexus between public health and land-use development patterns. The
grant will fund the creation of an alliance among the District Council
and health and education professionals. The alliance will focus on
Orange County specifically, but the best practices and solutions
explored during a series of conferences will have broader applicability.
The project will result in a publication on ten ways to build healthier
communities.

Oregon/Southwest Washington - $25,000 (FY08 RdI)
A $25,000 grant has
been awarded to the ULI Oregon/Southwest Washington Transportation
Infrastructure Funding Project, a collaborative effort between the
district council and the Metro Regional Government, to address the
critical issue of infrastructure funding. The program will focus on
community outreach at a regional level with a goal of laying the
groundwork for adoption of a continuing regional infrastructure
development plan that supports the region’s comprehensive
plan.
ULI Oregon/SW Washington - $35,000 (FY06 RdI)
This new District Council will convene a two-day conference in
central Oregon where a SWOT (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and
treats) analysis will be used to evaluate Oregon's existing land use
system and the implication of Measure 37. A wide rage of participants
will be invites, including public officials; individuals from the
private, nonprofit, and academic sectors; and ULI Senior Resident
Fellows. Results will be presented to legislative policy makers.

Philadelphia - $25,000 (FY08 Rd1)
Establishing a
Mayors’ Forum on Real Estate Development and Infrastructure won a
$25,000 grant for ULI Philadelphia. The Mayors’ Forum will convene
city officials, land use professionals and civic leaders to develop a
shared vision for the future of Philadelphia and build consensus on
major land use issues and priorities. In collaboration with the
mayor’s office, ULI Philadelphia will organize 12 educational
workshops to identify solutions to the region’s land use issues.
These findings will be published as a guide to best development
practices and smart growth policies for Philadelphia that could serve as
a model for other communities.
ULI Philadelphia and the Borough of Collingswood, NJ -
$20,000 (FY07 RdI)
ULI Philadelphia and
the Borough of Collingswood, a suburb of Philadelphia in southern New
Jersey located along a prominent commuter rail line, will hold an
educational symposium and a subsequent public engagement forum to build
consensus on the redevelopment of a nine-acre parcel surrounding the
Collingswood PATCO station. The development will be a model for
transit-oriented development throughout the region. The result of the
grant will be a community-based guide for developers interested in
developing the site.
ULI Pittsburgh and the Urban Redevelopment Authority of
Pittsburgh - $24,500 (FY06 RdII)
ULI Pittsburgh will
partner with the Urban Redevelopment Authority of Pittsburgh and
Carnegie Mellon University’s Urban Lab program in the School of
Architecture to address strategies for the reuse of vacant land in two
underutilized commercial corridors. The team, including local ULI
members and Philadelphia’s ULI inner city adviser, will prepare
feasibility studies focusing on the reuse potential of vacant properties
in the two corridors with significant input from the community through
charrettes. The project will result in a publication as well as a
request for proposals to redevelop key sites.
Regional Plan Association - $40,000 (FY06 RdI)
The Regional Plan Association will hold a community visioning
exercise for a model disadvantaged, low-income, or "new immigrant"
neighborhood that could benefit from the redevelopment of underused
transit stations or construction of new ones to create affordable
housing and job opportunities. Before the visioning event takes place,
RPA will complete a study to find a suitable model market, and several
factors for the selected neighborhood will be analyzed, including
zoning, land use, housing, commercial demand, demographics and regional
market opportunities.
ULI Richmond - $10,000 (FY06
RdII)
ULI Richmond will
convene a forum for collaborative thinking among for-profit and
nonprofit developers. This dialogue will allow the district council to
build on an earlier partnership among ULI Richmond, Local Initiative
Support Corporation Richmond, and their counterparts in Chicago on a
similar topic. The forum will include roundtable discussions, breakout
sessions, examples of successful collaborations between forprofit and
nonprofit developers, and a presentation by a ULI inner city adviser, to
be followed by mobile workshops and publication of a report.

Sacramento - $20,000 (FY07 RdI)
To support
implementation of the Sacramento Blueprint regional visioning effort,
ULI Sacramento, will work with the regional nonprofit, Valley Vision, to
convene stakeholders to discuss and develop a unified funding strategy
for civic infrastructure, such as arts, sports, scientific, and
entertainment facilities. The grant will fund an inventory of existing
and planned civic amenities, two forums, research on best practices and
potential funding mechanisms, and a summary publication.

San Diego/Tijuana - $25,000 (FY08 RdI)
A series of four mayoral
forums and a regional symposium will be held to educate 18 mayors from
the San Diego region and four mayors from Northern Baja, Mexico, on the
challenges of future growth and the advantages of cooperative problem
solving. A $25,000 grant will fund these forums, whose findings will be
published as a Regional San Diego Sustainability Report, which will
outline the top 10 issues facing the region over the next 25 years. ULI
San Diego/Tijuana district council anticipates this will lead to another
quarterly Mayor’s Forum for 2009.
ULI San Francisco - $19,500 (FY05 RdI)
ULI San Francisco will conduct a two-day leadership forum to open the
dialogue between ULI members and public officials. The curriculum
includes leadership techniques, development economics, infrastructure
financing, and public involvement. Three months following the event, a
follow-up session will be held to solicit feedback.
ULI San
Francisco - $25,000 (FY07 RdII)
ULI San Francisco will
design, market and launch new outreach features for its UrbanMap website
to promote community dialogue about best land use practices. New
features will include: “Public Forum,” where interested
parties can exchange opinions on land use issues; “In the
News,” a repository of important news stories; and “Shared
Insights,” a real estate development blog. UrbanMap is a new
website developed by ULI San Francisco that is the first online,
comprehensive compilation of land use maps and reports for the Bay
Area.
ULI Seattle - $20,000 (FY05 RdII)
This grant will support the development of a comprehensive,
interconnected public open space network for the City of Seattle. The
program includes data gathering, visioning charrettes, and the
development of implementation recommendations. ULI Seattle will partner
with the University of Washington in this project.
ULI Seattle - $25,000 (FY07 RdII)
ULI Seattle and
regional entities have partnered to create a regional alliance of
stakeholders and to develop a model for increasing workforce housing
production. The CAG will fund the first year of a three-year initiative
that will raise awareness of the workforce housing crisis in
Seattle, and identify policy changes that are necessary to
encourage the construction of additional workforce housing. The alliance
will also offer support to several employers within these jurisdictions
that are interested in implementing employer assisted
housing.
ULI South
Carolina - $21,362 (FY05 RdII)
Grant funds will be used to support the implementation of the Quality
Growth recommendations developed by a ULI-sponsored statewide committee.
Activities under the grant will include meetings with key state and
local leaders and interest groups, conference presentations, media
outreach, monitoring legislation related to growth and media outreach.
Matching funds will be provided by two university partners.
ULI South
Carolina- $25,000 (FY07 RdII)
ULI South Carolina
will launch the ULI South Carolina Center for Sustainable Leadership in the fall
2007— a nine-month educational program to build leadership
capacity on land use issues.
Each year the Center will sponsor a class of
twenty student-leaders in three regions of the state. The curriculum
will incorporate an abbreviated Reality Check exercise
and UrbanPlan workshop as
well as leadership training. For the
“final exam”, each student will participate in a
ULI Technical Assistance
Panel.

Southwest Florida - $25,000 (FY08 RdI)
The Young Leaders Group and
the Economic Development Council (EDC) of Collier County are planning an
incentive-based Workforce Housing Stimulus Program, designed to identify
a long-term solution to the affordable/workforce housing crisis in
southwest Florida. A $25,000 grant will be used to collaborate with
Collier County to facilitate the development and implementation of
transportation enhancement, infrastructure investment, inclusionary
zoning, workforce housing: fee payment assistance and a density bonus
program. A training manual will be created that can be used as a model
by other communities to develop solutions to workforce
housing.
ULI Washington - $15,000 (FY05 RdI)
ULI Washington will organize a forum, hosted by their new Inner-City
Advisor to identify common issues faced by the not-for-profit and
for-profit development communities. As part of this program, ULI
Washington will hold a competition among community development
corporations for three complementary Technical Advisory Panels.
